Book Conversion Specialist

O'Reilly Media, Inc., a leading computer book publisher, is seeking a bright, inventive individual to the fill the position of Book Conversion Specialist in our Cambridge, MA, office.

If you're interested in using technology to improve efficiency and automation in a publishing environment, then this might be the position for you. We’re looking for someone who has great technical skills and an interest in solving practical, hands-on problems. You must also enjoy working with others to produce a great end product -- in this case, high-quality technical books.

Responsibilities

As a Book Conversion Specialist, you will be responsible for repurposing draft manuscripts of books into publishable format. You will work with a team of software specialists to process and convert text between multiple formats, including MS Word, FrameMaker, InDesign, XML, pod, and Open Office. You will participate in research, development, and testing by suggesting improvements to conversion tools, modifying conversion tools, and performing quality assurance checks on new tools. An important part of your role will be to provide user support to authors, editors, and production editors who are use various text formatting tools and templates.


Minimum Requirements

  • The most important requirement for this position is the ability and desire to learn new technical skills.
  • Excellent basic computer skills are essential, including knowledge of multiple operating systems and/or programs.
  • Experience with desktop publishing programs, especially FrameMaker and/or InDesign, would be very helpful.
  • Unix skills would be useful, particularly knowledge of Unix directory structures and commands.
  • Knowledge of Perl would be helpful, especially Perl scripting in an office or academic setting.
  • XML skills are desirable, particularly experience manipulating text written in DocBook XML.
  • MS Word, HTML, regular expressions, and/or VBA skills are helpful, but not essential.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal, are necessary.
  • User support and liaison with other departments is an important part of this position, so you must enjoy working in a dynamic, cooperative environment.
  • Good attention to detail is also necessary.
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience is required.
